Ready To Begin Your Gender Transition?

If you arrived here asking “how do I change my gender?,”  here six recommendations we recommend taking before undergoing any procedures.

STEP 1

Explore your hormonal and surgical options for a gender transition.

Get a screening by a comprehensive transgender medicine clinic that adheres to WPATH standards, and with the guidance of a qualified and experienced team, begin your transition.

Under the care of board-certified endocrinologists and nurse practitioners, patients can undergo a psychological evaluation and accompanying hormonal therapy in a comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical setting alongside other patients at various stages in their transitions for fellowship and mentorship.

STEP 2

Choose your own next steps in your physical transition.

After some time undergoing hormone therapy, a patient may decide to take additional steps in transitioning from one gender to another.

These steps may involve altering one’s facial appearance, body shape, chest, or sex organs by way of sophisticated surgical procedures. Read more about options for procedures body and facial procedures.

STEP 3

Choose a local surgeon.

Patients may travel for care for various reasons, but remember that distance between you and your surgeon or surgical team decreases your access to ongoing care.

No surgery is without some degree of risk, so consider the possibility of complications, and think about how and where such complications could be treated. A minor setback could become a severe problem if left untreated for any length of time.

STEP 4

Work with your care team to

determine an individualized

plan of care.

Every patient’s journey is different. Consult with your doctor to discuss your goals and expectations and to come to a mutual, informed agreement about what procedure(s) you’ll undergo. Understand the procedures, the recovery, and the risks involved.

Questions? Review your plan in a one-on-one confidential consultation with Dr. Mundinger's team.

STEP 5

Determine how you'll pay for surgery

Some procedures are covered by some insurance. Most practices offer several options for paying for your gender confirmation procedures. Be sure to find out what may be covered by yours. Learn more about paying for your surgery.

STEP 6

Get all the information before your surgery.

Ask your surgeon these questions and write down the answers. Make sure you understand everything that's going to happen before it happens:

  1. Here are a few questions to ask your surgeon as you’re preparing for your procedure(s):

  2. How many procedures does my surgery entail?

  3. Will it be finished in one day, or will I make multiple visits?

  4. Is there a hospital stay involved?

  5. Where will I be taken after my surgery is finished?

  6. What medication will I be given or prescribed after surgery? Will that medication will be covered by my insurance?

  7. Will I have dressings/bandages after surgery? When will they be removed?

  8. Will there be drains? For how long?

  9. At what point after surgery can I safely bathe or shower?

  10. At what point can I resume my normal activity and exercise?

  11. What is the plan for follow-up care?
